Changing The Look Of Your Kitchen With Painted Kitchen Cabinets

There are a number of different finishes you can get for your kitchen cabinets. Many kitchen cabinets either have a natural finish or are stained to mimic the look of various woods, while others are painted. If you are tired of the way your kitchen cabinets look, or if your kitchen cabinets are looking a bit dingy, one way to update the look of your kitchen is to use painted kitchen cabinets.  Color trends for kitchen cabinets for 2010 range from hues of purple, blue, orange and yellow.  The new neutral color is gray and can be accented with colorful kitchen counter top appliances. Some alternatives would be refacing or investing in unfinished kitchen cabinets.
You can get painted kitchen cabinets either by painting the cabinets that you already have, or purchasing new kitchen cabinets that have been painted. Before you count on just refinishing your current cabinets though, you need to check to make sure that they will be able to take a coat of paint. Usually metal cabinets, solid wood cabinets, and wood veneer cabinets can be painted. Those with plastic laminate or melamine plastic coatings, however, cannot be painted.

The least expensive way to get this look is obviously just to refinish your own kitchen cabinets and turn them into painted kitchen cabinets. This can take a bit of time and effort, but by doing it yourself you will save a lot of money and be able to get your choice of cabinet colors since you will be choosing the paint. In order to paint the cabinets yourself, you will need to take off all the hardware, doors, and drawers. Then you need to thoroughly clean all surfaces. Make sure to label everything so that you know where it goes when you put your cabinets back together. Paint the face frames first, then the doors and drawers. Once everything is painted you can reassemble the cabinets and enjoy the new look you have achieved.

Those who aren't do-it-yourself type people can hire someone to come and do this for them. It will still be less expensive than getting new cabinets, and you will still be able to choose the exact color that you want. The job will probably be done more quickly by professionals as well.

Finally, if you need new cabinets anyways, you can purchase painted cabinets from many different retailers. Your color selection won't be as varied, but you will still have a lot of choices to choose from. This will be more expensive than the other options, but not necessarily more expensive than buying new cabinets with other types of finishes would be.
