Deciding Whether Or Not A DIY Kitchen Cabinet Install Is Right For You

Kitchen cabinets can be one of the more expensive parts of your kitchen design, depending on the type that you choose. Sometimes it is worth the extra money to get something that is really nice looking and really well made so that you have a great kitchen. One way to save money on your kitchen cabinets is to do a DIY kitchen cabinet install. However, this can be a lot of work and it isn't for everyone.
The first thing you need to consider when deciding whether or not to do a DIY kitchen cabinet install is whether or not you have the necessary tools and skills. You can purchase ready to install kitchen cabinets from most cabinet resellers like Home Depot and Lowes.  This job doesn't necessarily need a lot of tools, though you probably want a drill, a hammer, screwdrivers, a level, a ruler, and a pencil at the very minimum, though a stud finder is also very useful. However, it does require a bit of skill since you need to get them properly placed, level, and hung in such a way that they will be stable (meaning connected to the wall at the studs).

Another thing to consider is whether or not you will be able to get some help with the DIY kitchen cabinet install. These cabinets can be very heavy, even when they are empty, and you will need one person to hold the cabinets in place while the other attaches them. This really is a two person job, so make sure you have a willing buddy or two to help you out with it. Keep in mind that it will take quite a bit of your time, even with a helping hand since you have to measure everything, install the cabinets, and then put on the doors, drawers, and other finishing touches. Some DIY cabinets might also need to be assembled before you install them.

If you don't have a lot of experience with DIY projects, a DIY kitchen cabinet install might not be the right place to start. The cabinets cost a lot of money, so you don't want to risk ruining them accidentally while you are trying to install them. Even if you don't ruin the cabinets, if you are not careful you could end up with them installed a bit crooked, which also wouldn't be the best outcome. In situations like this it might be worth the extra money to have them professionally done.
